Preservation and Restoration in Greece
Along with our affiliate organization, Elliniki Etairia, SPGH has carried out several preservation projects in Greece. One of its first undertakings was the restoration of the historic Plaka House in Athens, which now serves as Elliniki Etairia's headquarters.
SPGH also assisted in preserving the manuscript library at the Monastery of St. John the Theologian in Patmos, which contains an extensive collection of early Christian texts. SPGH trained the monks in modern techniques of manuscript preservation and conservation. (View a selection of items in the collection here.)
In 1993, SPGH restored the refectory of Hosios Loukas, an 11th-century monastery near Delphi which now houses a museum of Byzantine relief sculpture, and in 1995 restored friezes and sacred objects in the Monastery of St. Catherine in the Sinai.
